Can you please explain what the function of the "margin stops" is?

The margin stops allow you to set the distance that the viewing table can slide to the left and/or right. This makes it easier to read a page, as you can set the table to slide only as far as it’s left and right margins in either direction, which is why we call them "margin stops".

To set the left-hand margin, first slacken the left-hand margin knob at the front of the reading table and slide it to the left. Position the table so that the left margin of the text is on the screen. Slide the knob as far as it will go to the right and then tighten the knob. Repeat for the right margin stop, sliding it to the right instead.

If you are not using the margin stops, move them to their outmost positions. Or you can stop all sideways movement of the table by moving both margin stops to the centre and tightening them.

To increase the movement resistance of the table so it does not slide so easily, simply tighten the knob on the right-hand side of the reading table. Likewise to decrease the resistance, loosen the knob.

How can I set the Presets of my SmartView?

This setting is only available on color units. There are two preset size settings that can be set individually, and you can change them if you wish to do so at any time. Presets are a great idea for handling things you commonly view, such as the newspaper, or perhaps a novel you are reading over time.

The preset button can be found to the right hand side of the size dial on the front of the unit. To save a preset simply place an example of the commonly viewed material on the reading table. Press the Preset button to select the first Preset. If this is not the Preset that you want to change, press the Preset button again, which selects the second Preset. Whichever preset you select, the same procedure applies. Adjust the size control until you are happy with it. To save this setting, press the Preset button for 3 seconds - you will here a beep when the setting has been saved.

If you want to set the other Preset simply repeat the instructions as above. Each time you press the Preset button it cycles between your two saved settings.

Is it possible to freeze the Auto Focus when handwriting?

Yes this function is available (on color units only). There may be times when you wish to freeze the focus and stop the SmartView from automatically focusing, when viewing pictures or writing a shopping list for example.

To turn on the Freeze Focus, place the material you wish to view on the reading table. Adjust the size control so that the magnification level allows you to view the material comfortably. The SmartView will perform an automatic focus at this magnification level. After this has occurred press and hold the Mode button for 3 seconds. The SmartView will beep to confirm that the freeze focus is on and that the magnification level is locked.

To turn off the Freeze Focus and restart the automatic focusing, you may either move the size control or press the Preset button. If you turn your SmartView off in Freeze Focus setting and turn it back on - it will now be back in Auto Focus mode.

What does the Mode button do?

1 This is the push button on the left-hand edge of the control panel. As you push this button the SmartView will cycle through three modes:
  1. Full color mode (color units only) or Photo mode (black and white units) - this mode is best for viewing photographs, objects, activities such as knitting etc.
  2. Reading mode using the background and foreground color combination selected with the Picture knob
  3. Reading Mode using the inverse of the background and foreground color combination selected with the Picture knob

What is the purpose of the Picture knob?

The Picture knob allows you to select from 16 combinations of foreground and background colors. Even though most text is black-on-white, you may find that the one of the choices of foreground and background colors is easier to see and less tiring to use. (Please note that this function is only available on SmartViews used with a VGA or PC monitor)

If you are using a standard TV monitor with your SmartView (where applicable) then the Picture knob will adjust the level of contrast so that you can comfortably read a wide range of material.

Please note the above functions are available when you are in reading mode only.

What is the best way of reading a document?

To read a document, place it on the table and adjust the size control to a magnification level that is comfortable for you to view, remembering that the smaller the text, the more you will see on the monitor and therefore the easier it will be to read quickly. If you wish, set the margin stops, as explained above.
As you read, move the reading table to the left, so that the text moves across the screen at a comfortable speed. If you wish to find a particular part of the document, place a finger on the document under the camera and once you see your finger on the screen you can now identify your location.

Most documents are easier to read in a high contrast or selectable color mode. As with anything, the more you use and become comfortable with your SmartView settings, the faster you will become at using the SmartView to read documents.
