This section features step-by-step instructions on how to carry out a range of functions on the BrailleNote or VoiceNote. Click on the question to access the instructions.
How do I get started with the BrailleNote Viewer on the Visual Palm Display?
| 1 |
Turn the PalmOne Visual Display on:
The power button is recessed on the top right of the PalmOne and has a green line on it. A simple press turns the unit on or off, but there is a moment's delay between the release of the button and the response. |
| 2 |
On the PalmOne turn Bluetooth on and make discoverable:
Tap the picture of a house (the home icon) on the lower left portion of the PalmOne. This will bring up either a start-up menu or a desktop display. Tap again to toggle between the menu and display. Choose "Bluetooth" from the start-up menu. In the Bluetooth folder, tap "On" after the word "Bluetooth." It will now say, "Bluetooth is on." Next to the word "Discoverable" tap the menu arrow and tap "Yes". |
| 3 |
You may also personalize the name of your PalmOne:
After "Device Name" tap the default name "Palm OS device" in the device name box. This will open an "Edit Device Name" box with the default name on a dotted line. Tap anywhere on the line (highlight by dragging the stylus over the whole name). Now tap "ABC" on the lower left portion of the PalmOne and a Keyboard box will come up. Use the stylus to type as on a keyboard. When finished tap "Done." Double check the name in the "Edit Device Name" box and tap "OK."
|
| 4 |
Then finished tap the home icon on the PalmOne. Do not Setup Devices on the PalmOne.
|
| 5 |
On the PalmOne find the BrailleNote Viewer program:
Tap the home icon to bring up the desktop display. Tap the BrailleNote icon. (If you don't see it, look in the upper right corner of the display and make sure the word "All" is next to
the menu arrow. If it isn't, tap the menu arrow and tap "All" from the drop down menu.) This opens the BrailleNote Viewer program. Touch the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the program page NOT the magnifying glass icon on the lower right portion of the PalmOne to begin the Pairing phase. The display on the PalmOne now says BT Discovery Mode. Leave the Palm as it is now and switch to the BrailleNote.
|
| 6 |
On the BrailleNote:
Go to Options/Connectivity/Bluetooth menu. BrailleNote will ask bluetooth on, answer Y, for yes. Press Enter; BrailleNote will now ask you search for devices say yes. You will need to wait for a few seconds while the BrailleNote is searching for bluetooth devices. Spacebar through the list of Bluetooth devices, find the Palm device (the name set in the PalmOne Bluetooth settings above or Palm OS device); Press Enter. The BrailleNote will ask if you want to Pair and Activate. Answer yes and press enter. When the BrailleNote asks for an Authentication Code simply press the enter key. listen to make sure the BrailleNote states that your device is paired and active. Return to the Main Menu. (Do this for each BrailleNote you wish to view.) |
| 7 |
Now on the BrailleNote go to options menu spacebar and the letter O on the BT units, or function key and the letter O on the QT units. Press the letter v for visual display, it should say off, press the letter b, for bluetooth and press enter. |
| 8 |
On the PalmOne: Press the "Done" button to close BT Discovery Mode.
You only have to Discover, Pair and Activate the first time. After that you should only need to connect. An exception to this is if the BrailleNote Bluetooth settings are reset with a 4+5+6 or j+k+l. (A hard reset.) Then you will have to repeat the steps above for pairing and activating your BrailleNote and maybe turn your visual display on again to Bluetooth. |
| 9 |
Use the BrailleNote Viewer
On the BrailleNote to view: Go to Options/Visual Display menu: It should say
"currently off"; enter "b" for Bluetooth. The BrailleNote says "Bluetooth". Press Enter. If you have more than one Bluetooth Device paired i.e. Blue logger GPS, you may need to press the spacebar until you find the Palm device. Press Enter.
|
| 10 |
On the PalmOne:
Open the BrailleNote Viewer program by tapping the BrailleNote icon on the desktop display. Press "Connect". The Bluetooth icon in the upper right corner should become bold and dark blue. (When the BrailleNote connects with the PalmOne there are audible tones and the PalmOne will display a connection in progress box.) The connection takes a minute or two and after the box disappears it still takes about 15 seconds before the PalmOne user will have a view of the BrailleNote user's keystrokes. |
| 11 |
If the PalmOne Display isn't working:
On the PalmOne BrailleNote Viewer program tap clear and then tap connect. It is likely that a diagonal red line will slash across the Bluetooth symbol in the upper right hand corner. Have the BrailleNote user turn the BrailleNote off and then back on. You should be connected, but it takes about 15 seconds before the viewer displays the BrailleNote user's keystrokes. The Bluetooth icon in the upper right hand corner will become bold and dark blue and a moment or two later a view of the BrailleNote's functions will be displayed. |
| 12 |
When you turn the PalmOne on it comes up to whatever screen you turned it off in. Therefore, you can leave it in the BrailleNote Viewer Program all the time. When you turn the PalmOne on it will likely come up with a BT Disconnected message telling you to turn off and then on the mPower. Hit OK and turn the BrailleNote off and on. It should start to display the BrailleNote user's keystrokes in about 15 seconds. If not, tap clear and connect on the PalmOne and turn the BrailleNote off and on one more time. Again, wait at least 15 seconds for the viewer to work. You have about a 30 foot range of using the Bluetooth visual palm display with a BrailleNote, if you get to far away from the BrailleNote you will lose Bluetooth connection. |
| 13 |
Final notes:If you received your visual palm display from HumanWare with the special free offer coupon, then you most likely will have all software installed on your visual palm display. If you received it in its original packaging, then you will need to attach it to the computer and do active sync and install all the software that came with the visual palm display and then you will need to call your local HumanWare dealer or go to the HumanWare web page to download the BrailleNote visual palm display program and install it also on your visual palm display device through active sync.
Important, do not let your visual palm display battery go dead, or you will have to install all the software again on your device through active sync. Otherwise do a backup of your visual palm device to a SD, secure digital card or to your computer

From Blazie to BrailleNote
How can I access files that were created on my Blazie notetaker after copying them to my BrailleNote?
If you have created files on your Blazie note taker and wish to access them on your BrailleNote, read the options below to find the one that suits your situation.
|
| 1 |
Since you were able to create files on your Blazie product without file extensions, you will need to rename these files with a ".TXT" for text files and ".BRF" extension for Braille files.
- If you have already copied the files to your BrailleNote, the fastest way to rename these files is to use ActiveSync and your computer.
- Using Windows Explorer, choose "Mobile Device", then "Flash Disk", then the folder where you have placed your files.
- Use your arrow keys to select the file you would like to rename and then press "F2" you will then be in an edit box where you can change the file name.
|
| 2 |
If you have not yet copied your files from your Blazie product you can use the commands in your Blazie note taker for renaming files. |
| 3 |
If you are not a Windows user and have a computer that you use with DOS, you can use the DOS rename command to rename files that you have copied to disk or a directory on your hard drive. Here is an example of how that works:
- Change to the drive or directory where you have copied your files.
- Type "REN Old filename new filename" and press "ENTER." You will need to do this for each file.
|
| 4 |
If you have copied the files to a disk and not yet copied them to your BrailleNote you can use your computer and the steps in Option 1 above to rename your files. |
| 5 |
Once the files have file extensions and are on a floppy disk, then:
- From the main menu of the BrailleNote, Select the File Manager by pressing F.
- Select Copy File by pressing C.
- Plug the disk drive AC adapter into a power socket and the PCMCIA plug into the card slot on the right side of the BrailleNote.
- Insert the floppy disk into the disk drive.
- You will be prompted for a "source drive" name. Press SPACE until you reach the "Storage Card" option and press ENTER.
- Select the route folder option by pressing ENTER. Note: If you have stored these files in sub-folders, select a folder instead.
- You will then be prompted for a "File Name." You may copy the files manually, or press SPACE with dots 3-5 to copy multiple files at one time. (See Section 12.11 of the BrailleNote User Guide, which refers to Using Wild Cards).
- Follow the necessary steps to copy the selected files to the desired folder on your Flash Disk.
|
| 6 |
To copy these files to your BrailleNote using the ActiveSync Utility, refer to Chapter 14.2 in the BrailleNote User Guide for an overview and instructions on using ActiveSync. Then, follow these steps:
- Initiate a guest connection between the PC and BrailleNote using the ActiveSync Utility.
- Place the floppy disk with the Blazie files into the PC’s disk drive.
- Using either "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer", open the "A" drive.
- Press "CONTROL+A" to select all the files on the floppy disk or manually select the files you wish to copy and press CONTROL + C to copy them to the Windows clipboard.
- Open the "Mobile Device" Option under either Windows Explorer or My Computer. This will present the BrailleNote as an external drive to which you can paste files.
- Open the Flash Disk folder under Mobile Device, and press CONTROL + V to paste the copied files into the desired folder.
