KNOWN PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS 1. DESCRIPTION ============== Keynote GOLD Multimedia is a software-based synthesizer that uses your computer's sound card and, unlike traditional synthesizers, does not require any additional hardware. Keynote GOLD Multimedia is compatible with all major screen readers and accessibility software. It is not linked to any screen reader so you only need buy one copy of Keynote GOLD Multimedia that will work with all your screen readers and accessibility software. The multilingual version of Keynote GOLD Multimedia is capable of speech in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Dutch. A characteristic of all software-based synthesizers is that a conflict exists if the software synthesizer and another program playing sampled sounds (like WAV files) try to use the Sound Card at the same time. Programs that play sampled sounds include some games, and web browsers that are set to automatically play downloaded sounds. Be careful with programs like this and be aware that if you play a WAV file, speech may be disabled until the WAV file has finished. The playing of audio CDs and synthesized sounds through the Sound Card does not cause conflicts. 2. CHOICE OF LANGUAGE ===================== This section applies only to the multilingual version of Keynote GOLD Multimedia. During installation of Keynote GOLD Multimedia, its default language is set to match your Windows language. You can change this to be any of the six available languages. To change the default language of Keynote GOLD Multimedia, edit the file KNSYNTHS.INI which is in the Windows directory, usually C:\WINDOWS. Using a text editor such as Notepad, find the section headed "[All]", and in this section find the line beginning "DefaultLanguage=". Change the language name at the end of this line to the name of the default language you prefer. Then check that this language name is also included in the line beginning "Languages=". Comment lines (beginning with ";") in KNSYNTHS.INI list the names of the available languages. The files for all six Keynote GOLD languages are copied onto your hard disk during installation but you can select which ones will be loaded into memory. By not loading unwanted languages into memory, you can reduce the usage of memory and not have to cycle through unwanted languages when you change the current language in your accessibility programs. To change the languages that Keynote GOLD Multimedia loads into memory, edit the file KNSYNTHS.INI in the Windows directory using a text editor such as Notepad. Find the section headed "[All]", and in this section find the line beginning "Languages=". Following the "=" on this line is a list of language names. Remove language names from the list, or add them to the list, until the list includes only the languages that you want to have loaded into memory. Comment lines (beginning with ";") in KNSYNTHS.INI list the names of the available languages. 6. HOW TO GIVE FEEDBACK ======================= If you have any comments or questions regarding this exiting new product, we would love to hear from you. Please forward your email to feedback@pulsedata.com 7. CHECKING YOUR SOFTWARE VERSION AND SERIAL NUMBER =================================================== If you need to ask your distributor for support with Keynote GOLD Multimedia, you will need to provide its version number and serial number. Similarly, if you wish to give feedback or report a bug, this information will also be required. To get this information, run the Keynote GOLD Multimedia loader program, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KNGMML.EXE. This will display the Keynote GOLD Multimedia loader dialog box, which contains the version number and serial number. To have this information spoken to you, click the "Speak" button. To minimise the dialog box, click the "OK" button. To hide the dialog box so that it does not appear on the taskbar or when you press Alt-Tab, click the "Hide" button". To unload Keynote GOLD Multimedia, click the "Unload" button then click "Yes" in the warning box that appears. WARNING. If you unload Keynote GOLD Multimedia, speech will be disabled until you re-load Keynote GOLD Multimedia by running C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KNGMML.EXE again. 8. COPY PROTECTION ================== Keynote GOLD Multimedia has built-in copy protection that will not affect your normal use of the program. It prevents usable copies of the program being made, except by installing it from the master installation disks. The Keynote GOLD Multimedia installation disk 1 contains three authorization keys enabling the software to be installed up to three times. When transferring Keynote GOLD Multimedia to another computer it is important that it first be uninstalled, restoring the key to the installation disk 1, before installing it onto the new computer. An option is provided in the install program for uninstalling Keynote GOLD Multimedia. For instructions, see below. To check how many authorization keys are remaining on your installation disks, insert installation disk 1 into drive A: and run the program A:EVSHOW. When prompted, make sure that A: is selected. The number of authorization keys remaining and the serial number of your software will be displayed. EVSHOW can also be used to check if an authorization key is present on your hard drive. Insert installation disk 1 into drive A: and run the program A:EVSHOW. When prompted, select C:\. The number of authorization keys present on your hard drive and the serial number of your software will be displayed. If other programs that use the same copy protection (such as JAWS for Windows) are installed on your computer, their authorization keys might be displayed at the same time. Installing Keynote GOLD Multimedia twice to one hard disk does not use up a second key. This allows Keynote GOLD Multimedia to be installed for dual-boot installations of Windows 95 and Windows 3.1 or 3.11 using only one key, provided the two installations of Windows are on the same hard disk. To do this, install Keynote GOLD Multimedia in one version of Windows, then install it again in the other version of Windows. One key will authorise the use of both copies. Be sure to uninstall Keynote GOLD Multimedia before upgrading or changing basic hardware in your computer such as hard disks, the CPU, the motherboard, or disk controller or video adapter cards. Re-install Keynote GOLD Multimedia after the new hardware is installed. Otherwise an authorization key may be lost. If you do lose a key during a hardware upgrade, your distributor can help you to replace the key. 9. UNINSTALLING KEYNOTE GOLD MULTIMEDIA ======================================= To make uninstalling Keynote Gold Multimedia for transferring to another computer easy, an uninstall program is provided on the Keynote GOLD Multimedia installation disk. Uninstalling Keynote Gold Multimedia From Windows 95 a) Place the Keynote Gold Multimedia disk in drive A:. b) Click on Start, then Run. c) In the Run dialog, type A:UNINSTAL then click OK. NEW AND CHANGED BEHAVIOR IN THIS RELEASE ============================================ If you are upgrading from Keynote GOLD Multimedia version 1.13 or earlier, you will find that this new release of KNGMM behaves differently in a few ways from your previous version. The most important changes are listed here. 1. The maximum speech speed of Keynote GOLD Multimedia has been increased by about 35 percent. If your speaking accessibility programs are set to speak at or near the fastest speed, they will now speak a lot faster then before. You may wish to reduce their speed settings. 2. Keynote GOLD Multimedia now loads earlier during the Windows start-up process under Windows 95 and Windows 98. This allows it to be used with early-loading screen readers to read the Windows network log-in dialogs. It has the side-effect, though, of suppressing the normal Windows start-up sound. 12. KNOWN PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS ================================ Like all software, Keynote GOLD Multimedia has a few bugs that could not be fixed in time for the current release. We are continuing to fix the bugs and, when available, upgrades for the purpose of bug fixing will be posted on our web site for downloading (see the top of this file for the URL of our web site). This section lists potential problems and solutions to the problems, under the following headings: INSTALLING AND UNINSTALLING KEYNOTE GOLD MULTIMEDIA STARTING AND STOPPING WINDOWS OR WINDOWS PROGRAMS OPERATION WITH JAWS FOR WINDOWS GENERAL OPERATION OPERATION WITH DOS PROGRAMS INSTALLING AND UNINSTALLING KEYNOTE GOLD MULTIMEDIA PROBLEM. Installation procedure stops and speaks "Installation error. Press ENTER to continue." CAUSE. There is not enough space on the Keynote GOLD Multimedia installation diskettes to store spoken error messages for specific errors. Instead the installer speaks a general error message and displays a full error message in writing in a dialog box. ACTION. If possible, use your screen-reader to read the full error message. Otherwise, request sighted help to read the error message. It will describe the error and it may tell you how to fix the error. PROBLEM. Installation procedure exits without restarting Windows, and Keynote GOLD Multimedia does not load automatically at the end of the install. CAUSE. The Keynote GOLD Multimedia installer may be unable to restart Windows for various reasons, such as another program refusing to shut down. ACTION. Manually shut down and restart Windows. Keynote GOLD Multimedia should load and run normally. PROBLEM. Installation procedure restarts the computer and the computer accesses the diskette drive and hangs. CAUSE. On some computers the installation procedure reboots the computer, instead of just restarting Windows as it is intended to. If this happens the computer attempts to boot from the Keynote GOLD Multimedia diskette, which is not a bootable diskette. ACTION. Eject the diskette from the diskette drive, press the spacebar or the ENTER key, and the computer should restart normally. PROBLEM. Installation procedure hangs when accessing the diskette drive, and when the computer is restarted an error message appears: "Program is not authorized to run from this drive". CAUSE. On a few recent models of PC, the Keynote GOLD Multimedia installer hangs when reading the authorization key from diskette when running under Windows 95. ACTION. If you have not already done so, run the Keynote GOLD Multimedia installer and select Install. When the installation process hangs, restart Windows 95 into Command Prompt Only mode, or restart the computer from an MS-DOS boot diskette. Then use the EVMOVE.EXE program on Keynote GOLD Multimedia Disk 1 to manually move an authorization key from the diskette drive to the root directory of the hard drive that Windows is installed on (this is normally drive C:). For example, enter the command A:\EVMOVE A: C:\ then type Y for Yes when prompted for confirmation. When the MS-DOS command prompt returns, restart you computer. Keynote GOLD Multimedia should load and run normally. PROBLEM. Uninstall procedure does not remove Keynote GOLD Multimedia from the computer. CAUSE. In some circumstances the uninstaller may not delete the Keynote GOLD Multimedia files from the Windows system directory (for instance if the files are write-protected). A screen reader program that is configured to load Keynote GOLD Multimedia will then still be able to do so when Windows restarts. ACTION. Manually delete the Keynote GOLD Multimedia files as described in section 9 of this Readme file, "Uninstalling Keynote GOLD Multimedia". STARTING AND STOPPING WINDOWS OR WINDOWS PROGRAMS PROBLEM. After installing Keynote GOLD Multimedia, the Windows start-up sound no longer plays. CAUSE. This is normal behavior. In Windows 3.1 and 3.11 the Windows start-up sound is disabled by the Keynote GOLD Multimedia installer to allow Keynote GOLD Multimedia to load. In Windows 95 and Windows 98 the Windows start-up sound is left enabled, but Keynote GOLD Multimedia loads early enough in the Windows start-up process to pre-empt the Windows start-up sound. PROBLEM. Keynote GOLD Multimedia fails to load under Windows 3.1 or 3.11, displaying an error message including the text "Failure opening sound playback. Cannot open sound playback device...". There may also be "Insufficient memory to run this application" error messages. CAUSE. If the Windows start-up sound is enabled in Windows 3.1 or 3.11, a conflict for the sound card prevents Keynote GOLD Multimedia from loading. ACTION. Disable the Windows start-up sound. You can do this automatically by reinstalling Keynote GOLD Multimedia. To do it manually, start Control Panel, select Sound, and set the Windows Start sound file to . OPERATION WITH JAWS FOR WINDOWS PROBLEM. After installing JFW 3.00.75 to run with Keynote GOLD Multimedia (choosing "Keynote Multi Media Software" during installation), JFW does not find Keynote GOLD Multimedia and does not load. CAUSE. JFW 3.00.75 shipped with incomplete support for Keynote GOLD Multimedia. ACTION. Copy the file KNGMM.JLS from the \JFW3 directory of Keynote GOLD Multimedia Disk 1 to the JFW directory (usually C:\JFW30), then restart JFW. Or, upgrade JFW to version 3.00.83 or later. PROBLEM. After installing JFW 3.00.75 to run with Keynote GOLD Multimedia (choosing "Keynote" during installation), JFW does not find Keynote GOLD Multimedia and does not load. CAUSE. JFW 3.00.75 shipped with an incorrect INI file for the Keynote SSIL driver. ACTION. Copy the files KEYNOTE.DLL and KEYNOTE.INI from the \KEYNOTE directory of Keynote GOLD Multimedia Disk 1 to the JFW directory (usually C:\JFW30), then restart JFW. Or, upgrade JFW to version 3.00.83 or later. PROBLEM. JFW 3 starts up in a language different from the Keynote GOLD Multimedia default language. CAUSE. This bug is present in the JFW 3.00.90 and 3.00.92 betas. Whenever any change is made under the JFW Voices menu, the current language when the change is made is saved in JFW's default configuration file for the voice that is being changed. Thereafter JFW selects that language for that voice when it starts. ACTION. In the JFW Languages menu, choose Synthesizer Language and select the language you want JFW to start up in. Then in the Voices menu choose Global and make any change. This updates JFW's start-up languages to the current language. PROBLEM. When using JFW 3 to screen-read in a DOS box on a Toshiba laptop, the arrow keys behave as though the Shift key was held down, i.e. they produce numbers rather than moving the cursor. CAUSE. This appears to be a bug in JFW. ACTION. Hold the Shift key down when using the arrow keys. PROBLEM. While reading text with JFW 3 continuous read (Insert+ Down Arrow), the speech may sometimes stop spontaneously. ACTION. Press the speech cut-off key (Control) once or a few times, then press Insert+Down Arrow to start reading again. PROBLEM. When a word is spelled with the JFW 2.0 Spell Word key, there are sometimes pauses of up to several seconds between speaking each letter. CAUSE. This is a bug in JFW 2.0 which affects SSIL synthesizers. It has been fixed in JFW 3.0. GENERAL OPERATION PROBLEM. Speech is quiet compared to other multimedia sounds. CAUSE. This may be due to use of an old version of the Keynote SSIL driver. Versions earlier than 1.3.3 (28 July 1997) treat Keynote GOLD Multimedia like the VoiceCard and set its initial volume to less than the maximum. ACTION. Set the speech volume to maximum in your accessibility programs. Or, copy KEYNOTE.DLL and KEYNOTE.INI from the \KEYNOTE directory on Keynote GOLD Multimedia Disk 1 into the directory where your present KEYNOTE.DLL is installed, then restart Windows. PROBLEM. Changes to the [All] section of KEYNOTE.INI do not affect the operation of Keynote GOLD Multimedia. CAUSE. From version 1.13.03, Keynote GOLD Multimedia's INI file name has been changed from KEYNOTE.INI to KNSYNTHS.INI. This change prevents the INI file being overwritten by the An Open Book version 3 installer. ACTION. Make your changes in KNSYNTHS.INI instead of KEYNOTE.INI. If you are not using any earlier version of Keynote GOLD Multimedia you may delete the [All] section from KEYNOTE.INI. PROBLEM. Clicking sounds may occur when speech is silenced by pressing the "Silence" or "Cut-off" key, or on each keypress while typing. CAUSE. We believe that the clicking is caused by the Windows waveform drivers. It affects all multimedia speech synthesizers. ACTION. No work-around is known at present. PROBLEM. The demonstration version of Keynote GOLD Multimedia can time out without warning the user, if the user is away from the computer when the fifteen-minute evaluation period expires. ACTION. Be aware that this can happen and that Windows must be restarted to continue the evaluation. PROBLEM. Speech gets "stuck" and repeats rapidly and continuously on some Toshiba laptop computers (e.g. the Satellite Pro 400CDT), if the floppy disk drive is accessed while the computer is speaking. The computer has to be hard-reset to stop the repeating. CAUSE. This is caused by a design flaw in the DMA hardware of certain models of Toshiba laptop computer introduced shortly before Toshiba began using the PCI bus in their laptop computers. The design flaw affects all multimedia waveform playback, not just Keynote GOLD Multimedia. ACTION. There is no known cure or work-around, except to ensure that the floppy disk drive is never read from or written to while any sound is being played by the computer. PROBLEM. Speech gets "stuck" and repeats rapidly and continuously. CAUSE. This is the classic symptom of a resource conflict involving the computer's sound hardware. It affects all multimedia waveform playback, not just Keynote GOLD Multimedia. ACTION. Check for a conflict of IRQ or DMA channels between any of the hardware and driver software installed in your computer. For Toshiba laptop computers, also see the previous problem and solution note. PROBLEM. Speech gets "stuck" briefly and repeats rapidly once or a few times. CAUSE. This sometimes happens in Windows 95 when the computer becomes especially busy accessing the hard disk. It is normal behaviour in Windows 95 and it affects all multimedia waveform recording or playback, not just Keynote GOLD Multimedia. ACTION. Try defragmenting your hard disks by running the Windows 95 "Disk Defragmenter". (Choose Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter, and in Disk Defragmenter's Advanced controls choose Full defragmentation.) OPERATION WITH DOS PROGRAMS PROBLEM. When MasterTouch is used, sometimes exiting and returning to Windows or ALT-TABBING to Windows causes the computer to lock up. Sometimes, the behaviour of MasterTouch is unstable. CAUSE. MasterTouch expects a touch-tablet interface to be present, but Keynote GOLD Multimedia does not provide one. ACTION. We do not recommend the use of MasterTouch with Keynote GOLD Multimedia. ================= END OF README.TXT =================
