KeySoft 7.2 Maintenance Release Installation Instructions - BrailleNote and VoiceNote Classic. IMPORTANT: This maintenance release is only for those already running KeySoft 7.2. If you are running an earlier version of KeySoft, upgrade using the instructions on http://www.humanware.com/Resources/KeySoft7.2Upgrade.asp. Either path will give you the latest release. These instructions are for the BrailleNote Classic and VoiceNote Classic only. There are separate instructions for the mPower and PK. Ensure that you are using the appropriate instructions. It is essential that you read all of the following instructions before starting the installation. You might like to transfer them to another computer, emboss, or print them for reference during the installation process. Should something go wrong during or after the installation, troubleshooting information is provided at the end of this document. What you will need to install the Maintenance Release. As well as your BrailleNote or VoiceNote Classic, you will need the following: 1. A CompactFlash (CF) card. This must be at least 64 megabytes in size and no more than 512 megabytes. You must use a CF card in the CF card slot on the Classic for the installation. It must be formatted as described in the 'Formatting the CompactFlash card' section below. 2. A PC with a Compact Flash card reader attached. This is required for formatting the CF card. 3. An internet connection for downloading the software and a way to copy it onto the CF card. You can download this file directly onto the CF card using your Classic or download it using a PC with an internet connection and a Compact Flash card reader. The file is over 30 Megabytes in size, so if you are using a dial-up connection downloading may take 1 to 2 hours. If you have faster access, then it's preferable to use it. Warnings. The following warnings are very important. Please read and follow. HumanWare strongly recommends that you backup your Flash Disk before performing the installation. Throughout the installation, your Classic must remain connected to the AC adapter at all times. You must use the CompactFlash card slot on the back panel of the Classic, not the PCMCIA slot with an adapter. Do not switch off, reset the unit, or remove the CompactFlash card at any time while the installation is in progress. Once the installation commences, you must let it run to completion. Stopping the installation part way through may cause the Classic to stop functioning and require you to send it back for service. Formatting the CompactFlash card. IMPORTANT: You MUST use the following procedure to format the CF card before proceeding with the upgrade. If you have previously formatted a card to FAT16, you can reuse this card to install the Maintenance Release. The Classic installation software requires the CF card to be formatted for FAT16 rather than the more common FAT32. Formatting erases all existing data from the card; so if your card contains data you want to keep, copy it to somewhere else before proceeding. Formatting cannot be done on the Classic, so you will need access to a PC with a Compact Flash card reader. To format the CF card prior to downloading the software, you will need to follow these instructions: 1. Place the CF card into the reader and ensure that you can access it. 2. There are many ways to format a card from within the Windows environment, and only one is outlined here. If for some reason you need to use another method, consult your Windows documentation. Open Windows Explorer or My Computer and select the appropriate drive that refers to the CF card. 3. Access the popup Context Menu by pressing SHIFT F10. 4. Choose “Format” from the Context Menu. 5. A dialog will be presented with a number of different properties that can be set for formatting and the one of interest is the one entitled "File System". Ensure that FAT is chosen from this combo box and not FAT32. 6. Navigate to the Start or OK button and press ENTER. You will be presented with a warning dialog, explaining that formatting will destroy all information on the card. If you are happy with this then you should choose OK to continue with the formatting. Once formatting is complete the card is ready to be used in the installation process. Downloading the KeySoft 7.2 Maintenance Release file. Please follow these instructions to download and copy the KeySoft 7.2 Maintenance Release file to your previously formatted CompactFlash card: 1. On a PC or your Classic, go to: http//www.humanware.com/Resources/KeySoft7.2MaintenanceRelease.asp Select the link called " KeySoft 7.2 Classic Download (build 47)" to download the file called NK.bin. 2. Save the NK.bin file to a known location on your PC, or if you are using the Classic, download it directly into the top level (root directory) of the CF card. The file is large (around 30 Megabytes) so if you are using a dial-up connection downloading will take from 1 – 2 hours. 3. If you have downloaded onto a PC, copy the NK.bin file to the top level (root directory) of the previously formatted CF card. Do not copy it into a folder on the card. Installing the Maintenance Release. 1. Ensure that your Classic is switched on, the AC Adapter is connected, and the CF card is inserted in the card slot on the back of the Classic. 2. Check that there is no card in the PCMCIA slot. 3. Hold down dots 4 and 5 on the Braille keyboard (keys J and K on the QWERTY), and press the reset button on the left side of the unit, just behind the on/off switch. Keep holding down dots 4 and 5 (keys J and K on the QWERTY) until the unit makes a sound, at which point you can release the held down keys. 4. The installation process will start and you will hear beeps every 1 – 2 seconds for around 30 minutes while the unit upgrades. 5. Note that if you have a Braille display, your Classic will display "Preparing…", in Grade 1 Braille once the upgrade has started. It will also display a percentage indicator that rises from 0 to 100 as the upgrade progresses. When this number reaches 100, it will display: "Upgrading…", followed by a percentage indicator. You will also notice a single dot which moves up and down as the installation progresses. 6. At the completion of the beeps, the new version of KeySoft will automatically start. Check that Version 7.2 Build 47 is shown as the version number. Troubleshooting. If you do not hear anything for 30 seconds or more after starting the installation: 1. Ensure that the mains plug and AC adapter are inserted correctly. 2. Check that the CF card is correctly inserted into the slot on the back of the unit. 3. Ensure that there is no "PDIBoot.exe" file on the CF card. 4. Restart the upgrade procedure by following the instructions from the beginning of the section, 'Installing the Maintenance Release.' If you hear a message telling you that you cannot run this version of KeySoft after installing it, then it is likely that you have installed the maintenance release when you should have installed the standard release. Refer to the Troubleshooting section of the mPower Upgrade Instructions on http://www.humanware.com/Resources/KeySoft7.2Upgrade.asp. If you have other problems during or after the installation, please contact your Distributor.
