Some BrailleNote mPower users previously complained of losing speech while working and this patch will lessen the severity of this problem or prevent this from occurring completely, depending on a number of factors. The upgrade can only be installed using an SD card, with a storage capacity of 512 MB or less. Larger cards, such as 1 gigabyte SD cards, will not work. However, we would recommend that a card with at least 64MB of storage capacity is used. Note that an SD card is required. Other media such as compact flash cards cannot be used to burn a new ROM image on the BrailleNote or VoiceNote mPower. The SD card must be formatted as FAT 16. A card formatted in FAT 32 will not work. To ensure that the upgrade process works smoothly, we recommend that you run a utility found on your KeySoft System Disk. Please be advised though that running this utility will cause all existing data on the SD card to be lost. First insert the SD card you wish to use for the upgrade, then to run the format utility: 1. Press U for the Utilities Menu. 2. Press A for Application program. 3. When prompted "run program from which drive?" choose the KeySoft System Disk. 4. When prompted for the directory name, choose "windows" and press ENTER twice. 5. When prompted for the program name, press the space bar until you hear "prepare SD card for Upgrade" and then press ENTER. 6. At the "command line?" prompt, press ENTER. You will then be able to complete the formatting of your SD card for a successful upgrade. 2. Obtaining the KeySoft image To obtain the bin file that is necessary to install the new image, download the appropriate image (nk.bin) file on this page. 3. Burning the image Once you have downloaded the image file and you have copied it to the SD card, ensure that the SD card is inserted correctly into the SD slot (below and slightly to the left of the compactflash card slot), and that the AC adapter is connected. For safety reasons, you cannot complete this install when the unit is running on batteries. Next, perform a 45 (JK) reset on your BrailleNote and a series of tones will be heard. These will get gradually higher in pitch as the upgrade process progresses. Once the upgrade process has completed, the BrailleNote will automatically reset and the new version of KeySoft will be announced.
