KeySoft 7.0 Upgrade Instructions - BrailleNote Classic. This booklet contains instructions on how to install the KeySoft 7.0 upgrade on your BrailleNote or VoiceNote (referred to as BrailleNote throughout this document, but the process applies to all models). Troubleshooting information is provided in print as well as in the Instructions folder of the CF card provided. Please transfer this file to a PC so you can access it during the upgrade process. It is also available on the world wide web at http://www.humanware.com/7_0. A separate instruction sheet is provided for each BrailleNote model, be it mPower, PK or BrailleNote. The instructions are different for each model so you need to ensure that you are using the appropriate instructions for your model. It is essential that you read all of the instructions before starting. Warnings. The following warnings are very important. Please read and follow. The Keysoft 7.0 upgrade requires that you are on Keysoft version 6.0 or higher. If your machine is not then you will need to complete a separate installation procedure to upgrade your unit to at least 6.0 before continuing with upgrading to Keysoft 7.0. If you do not have access to a previous upgrade then please contact your distributor. Your BrailleNote must remain connected via the AC adapter at all times. You must use the Compact Flash card slot at the back panel of the BrailleNote, not the PCMCIA slot with an adapter. The Compact Flash slot can be found at the back panel of the machine, next to the serial port. Do not reset the unit, or remove the Compact Flash card at any time. The Compact Flash card used for upgrading should be at least 64 megabytes in size and no more than 512 megabytes. If you are downloading your own copy of the software (not supplied to you on a card and delivered physically to you) then you will need to format your own Compact Flash card prior to copying the software upgrade to it. See the section on formatting your Compact Flash card later in these instructions to learn how to do this. It is very important to check that the Compact Flash card is formatted for FAT and not FAT32 Once the last stage of the upgrade commences, there is no going back as this upgrade is not just a software upgrade, it is a ROM image upgrade. Preparing your Compact Flash card. This section applies if you are downloading your own copy of the release from the Humanware software distribution site. If you have received a copy of the release on a Compact Flash card move to the next section. To prepare your own Compact Flash card prior to downloading the product key and software, you will need to follow these instructions: You will need access to a PC with a Compact Flash card reader attached. Place the Compact Flash card to be used into the reader and ensure that you can access files on the Compact Flash card. There are many ways from within the Windows environment that can be used to format the Compact Flash card, and only one is outlined here. Consult your Windows documentation for further methods. Right Click on the appropriate drive that refers to the Compact Flash card. Choose Format from the popup menu. A dialog will be presented with a number of different properties that can be set on the Compact Flash card and the one of interest is the one entitled "File System". Ensure that FAT is chosen from this combo box and not FAT32. Navigate to the OK button and press enter. You will be presented with a warning dialog, explaining that formatting will destroy all information on the card. If you are happy with this then you should choose OK and continue with the formatting. The card is now ready to be used in the upgrade process. Downloading the Product Key. Before installing the 7.0 upgrade, you need a product key. This can be downloaded from our website. If you don't have access to the internet, contact your distributor, who will be able to do it on your behalf. If this is the case, go to the next section. 1. On a PC or your BrailleNote, go to http://www.humanware.com/7_0. Click on the link called "Product Key Download". 2. In the first input field, type your BrailleNote's 5 digit serial number. This is in Braille on the bottom of your BrailleNote and can also be accessed from within Keysoft. From the Main Menu Press SPACE with dots 2-4 (READ with I on Qwerty) and press the spacebar twice. 3. The next field is a password field - type frog1. 4. Click on the "logon" button. 5. On the page that appears, there is a group of radio buttons. The last one is called KeySoft 7.0 key. Check this button then click on the "download" button below it. 6. On the page that then appears, follow the link called "Click here to Download package". A File Download window appears - click on the "save" button. We recommend that you save it to your PC's desktop, or if using your BrailleNote, to the upgrade Compact Flash card. The file is called KeySoft 7.0 Product Key (xxxxx).exe where xxxxx is your serial number. Remember, this is not the upgrade itself, just the product key. Installing the Product Key. Now that you have the Product Key file, you can install it. 1. If you haven't yet, copy the product key file to your BrailleNote, preferably to the Compact Flash card that will be used for the upgrade. 2. On your BrailleNote, go to the Utilities Menu, then Applications Program. 3. As described in the Utilities Chapter of the user guide, select the file KeySoft 7.0 Product Key (xxxxx).exe. At the prompt, "Command line?" press ENTER. 4. You will hear a welcome message. Press ENTER. 5. After a brief pause, you will hear a completion message. Press ENTER again as advised. You are returned to the Utilities menu. The Product key is now installed and you can go ahead and install the 7.0 upgrade software. Downloading Keysoft upgrade file. If you did not receive the upgrade on a Compact Flash card and you have a software only SMA then you will need to download the upgrade file and place it onto the Compact Flash card that has already been prepared for upgrade. Refer to the section titled "Preparing your Compact Flash card". If you did receive a Compact Flash card then you should skip this section. The Keysoft 7.0 upgrade file can be downloaded from our website. If you do not have access to the internet then please contact your distributor. Please follow these instructions to download and copy the file to your previously prepared Compact Flash card: 1. On a PC or your BrailleNote, go to http://www.humanware.com/7_0. Click on the link called "Keysoft 7.0 Classic Download". 2. Save the file (called NK.bin) to a known location on your PC, or if you are using the BrailleNote to download then directly onto the Compact Flash card. The Keysoft 7.0 image file is large and if you are using a modem then this may take from 1 - 2 hours. The file is around 30 Megabytes in size. 3. If you have downloaded onto a PC you will then need to copy the file onto the previously prepared Compact Flash card. 4. Ensure that the NK.bin file that you have downloaded is at the top level of the card and not in a folder. Upgrade Procedure. Ensure the BrailleNote is plugged into the AC Adapter and switched on, and the Compact Flash card provided is inserted in the card slot at the back of the BrailleNote. If you have a software only SMA then ensure that you have followed previous instructions on formatting, downloading and copying the appropriate files to a Compact Flash card. Ensure that there is no card in the PCMCIA slot. Hold down dots 4 & 5 on the Braille keyboard (keys J and K on Qwerty versions) and press the reset button on the left side of the unit, just behind the on/off switch. Hold down the two keys until the unit makes a sound. The full upgrade progress should start, and you should hear beeps every 1 - 2 seconds for around 30 minutes whilst the unit upgrades. At the completion of the beeps, the unit will reset and you will be placed back into Keysoft fully upgraded and ready to go. Troubleshooting. If you do not hear anything for 30 seconds or more try restarting the upgrade procedure, following the instructions from the start. Check that the Compact Flash card is correctly inserted into the slot on the back of the unit. Ensure that there is no "PDIBoot.exe" file on the Compact Flash card. Ensure that the mains plug and AC adapter are inserted correctly. If after upgrading you have problems with your email, address book or planner please contact your distributor.
