I use GPS every day when I'm riding the bus and it works great! The
first time I used it, I needed a sighted friend to indicate the
location of landmarks and bus stops along the way.
Once all of that information was put into my BrailleNote, I could
use GPS to locate landmarks, bus stops, local businesses, major
intersections, etc. independently. I could also determine my direction
of travel, the speed limit the bus was traveling as well as the number
of miles a particular business or landmark was from my current
position.
I've found GPS to be a tremendous help -- especially when I ride
the bus. I'm deaf-blind (totally blind with a severe to profound
hearing loss) and can't hear the bus driver call out my stops. Before
I started using GPS, I would give the driver an index card which
indicated my destination in both print and Braille. Now that I have
GPS, I can locate my stop independently."
